This Tram depot serves at least 100 people a day and washes 8 Trams. Prior to the refit drinking water was used to flush 10 toilets and urinals. The urinals were identified as a large consumer of water as they used at least 20L of water per flush.
The refit of the site included the installation of a 4,500L Rainwater Tank
with a Davey Rainbank system which provided water to the ten toilets on
site. We then replaced the urinals with waterless urinals (see gallery
picture). In addition to this we reduced the flow from all taps on site to 6L a
minute, and 9L a minute in all showers.
Already existing on the
site were three 18,000L tanks which collected rainwater but did not do anything
with it. We utilised these existing tanks and an additional tank (pictured
above) to provide water to the tram washing station (See Gallary for picture of
first tram washed).
In recognition of the water saving results of
this project, Sustainable Plumbing Solutions P/L was awarded Green Plumbing Commercial Project of the Year
(2005).
